In for a change? Want to sell your domain?

Southern Indiana web works has clients looking for local domains in a variety of industries. Domains have value. If you are closing down a shop, shifting to a new line of work, retiring, or otherwise in for a change, your website and its domain can have value to others. Here are a few tips to keep your domain value as high as possible:

  1. Don’t let it expire- It has value. Many sales professionals (insurance, mortgage, real estate, etc) let their domains expire and needlessly throw away much of their value. It is like bending a baseball card can remove much of it’s value.
  2. Plan ahead to sell it– It may be worth a little or a lot. The difference is often in PLANNING and taking time to find the RIGHT people to sell it to. Southern Indiana Web Works can help. We will happily offer free appraisals of your domains value and show you EXACTLY what adds value to your domain and who would be best to sell it to.
  3. Avoid hustlers and shysters- There are a lot of people out there buying domains. Did you know that? You need to talk to experts and not simply take the first thing you are told as the gospel truth. Respectable people in the world of websites will be happy to give you a list of others to check with on the value of your domain.
  4. Don’t be dissapointed if the value is less than you thought–you can increase it’s value and then sell it!! Unlike baseball cards, you can actively build the value of your domains! Want to know how? Give us a call, we will be happy to consult with you! The time to get started on this is NOW.

Good post Eric. Most people would think their domain was worthless. It may not be a big money maker but they may be able to recoup some or all of what they have spent on it. If you are moving to another profession anyway this would be a smart move.

    Thanks Wayne.

I wrote this because we were seeing people leave the mortgage and real estate business with domains that they had built up over time and simply letting them expire.

I’ve heard people say..”It doesn’t have any value–it has my name in it.” NOT TRUE.

A website is an asset. A domain is an asset. Sometimes they are two different things entirely.

    Thanks for dropping by.

Quick question - what’s your take on those that invest in domain names but don’t have any real business model behind them at the moment. My vision was always to buy search query type domain names and simply put up an unobtrusive landing page with a paragraph or two relative to the search query domain name. Maybe get a link or two pointing at them and then just forget about them. So in a couple years - they’ve been indexed, built up trust, cost me very little time and money, but more valuable then a non-indexed domain itself..

What’s your take on this strategy?

    Brad-

I like the strategy and do it myself. I like the idea of putting a blog up or something and linking to it much better than “parking” a domain where you are starting from scratch. Domains are assets and I think they are treated best that way.

It is the link age that is valuable right now more than the age of the domain (although that doesn’t hurt.), so getting a few inbound links to them is a good idea.

    Follow up Note:

I have some advanced strategies that I provide on a consulting basis to folks who have a specific interest in domaining. ;-)

The goal is to get the maximum return on your investment (of both time and money). Depending on your ability / desire to invest, there are a number of ways to make domains more valuable without actually actively a full on development.
