I couldn't agree more on the idea that SERP manipulation via link schemes is bad news. In fact my concerns would near paranoia. What I have always wanted to do but have been concerned with is to build a central site for my market and use the rel=me tag in addition to naming a blog roll my sites and link out to sites that soley cover the market area subdivisions. I think this could provide value to a end user or at least more so than having them have to click deeper and deeper into a site. I have not done this because I am concerned as to how it would be viewed and would love to hear what others have to say on the subject.

Nice post Eric. You can also add that link buying is suicidal. Sure, link buying will get ya rank, however, link buying will also get ya noticed by your competition who's spot you've just replaced. The same can be said for excessive reciprocal linking. Anyway, I haven't been by in awhile and thought I would stop and visit. Actually, I found myself here because I was doing a search for the "Greatest Real.. World" and noticed you are still number 1. Colleen's Squidoo page seems to be creeping up. Not that it matters, because we all know Colleen is the greatest. Right? :o)

I don't think that G spots these algorithmically - otherwise the link farmers would have a much shorter life span than they do. They're pointed out by spam reports & hand audits...and if you can spot it, so can the spam team.
